WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM OFFICIALLY A FAILURE:
Even Bono is giving it a miss. The rockstar is a Davos regular, using the World Economic Forum to push his campaign against poverty in developing countries. This year, however, he decided to stay in his recording studio. (BBC) NO HE CAN’T! (Also, this cover is from March ‘03. They’re asking this like two weeks before the US invaded Iraq, which means they just barely got...

A single and same voice for the whole thousand...
A couple of years ago, I plucked from my brain, in as random a fashion as I could manage, ten topics from a range of knowledge domains: World War II, Israel, George Washington, Genome, Agriculture, Herman Melville, Internet, Magna Carta, Evolution, Epilepsy. I then googled each one to see where Wikipedia’s article on the topic would rank. I first did the searches on August 10, 2006. The...

I mean, did I have a choice?
leoncrawl: From the back of a book I just got in the mail There is something about Lux. He’s a thief and a liar; he is selfish and self-absorbed and hopelessly vain. But while he looks like Lana Turner and romances like a true Casanova, Lux is actually more like a bumbling, oblivious Mary Tyler Moore. Amid shouting mobs, police shields, and the hurled bricks of the ’80s Brixton riots, Lux is...

katiebakes: [The CEO of subway]: 3. “Subway’s whole positioning is that we make customized sandwiches, right before your eyes, with your choice of bread, meats, cheeses, vegetables and sauces. We believe that they made every Subway sandwich the same and based the build on our pictures which include all the veggies. The majority of consumers don’t add all the veggies.” The whole story is...

Disturbing conclusions regarding food
absalomabsalom: fiatluxemburg: And so I ask you all, is there a rule against simply eating hummus with a spoon? If so, why? If not I may just eat entire vessels (the saller size ones) of hummus as I eat single-serving yogurt units. Luckily, I’ve thought long and hard about this question, and I know the answer: jouissance. There are many things out there that are really, really, really good...

Disturbing conclusions regarding food
I have always greatly enjoyed hummus. I regularly put it on sandwiches and eat it using pieces of pita or other varieties of bread. However, I recently have revived my interest in the ancestral or so-called “cave man” diet. I’m not going to explain it; it’s just basically Atkins. I’m not actually “on” it or whatever, it’s more of a game I think....

Pretending to pretend?
ATTN: Keyholez absalomabsalom: The 2008 winner of annual Turing test contest the Loebner Prize also won using a brilliantly simple strategy that Turing didn’t foresee. Elbot convinced three of 12 humans it was just like them by acting like a human pretending to be a robot. (#; also here vs. here)

Sundays are the best
keyholez: elsam: keyholez: I could not possibly disagree with this sentiment more. I actually howled out loud when I read it. UNFOLLOW. World views so different have no business intersecting. WHATEVER I HOPE YOU ENJOY CHURCH I’LL JUST BE HERE WEEPING AND RENDING MY CLOTHES Now, now everyone. I think we all know that all days of the week are equaly bad, each in their own special way.

Some serious people wrote this thing. It’s a little old but like I said, I’ve been lazy. Anyway, they have a sort of manifesto. I’ll pull out the headers for you: We call for an evidence-based approach to the evaluation of the risks and benefits of cognitive enhancement. We call for enforceable policies concerning the use of cognitive-enhancing drugs to support fairness,...

If the Obama campaign represented a sleek, new iPhone kind of future, the first day of the Obama administration looked more like the rotary-dial past. (WaPo, on how the White House has no tech)

Hey did you all realize that DC is so zeitgetist-y now? It’s true! The New York Times, your new DC alt-weekly, totally went to this one club and it was so cool. And now Obama is the new sixth borough. (Wonkette)

Watching 'Sunset Boulevard'
seedz: I don’t normally watch movies that were made in the good old days… Neither do I. Is this a big mistake or am I right that the past was silly. (The actual past, not The Past (which is to say, the future).)

Was it ever actually on fire?
hartman: Nick Gamache, 32, a software salesman, had moments earlier sent his wife a text message that read, “Planes on fire love you and the kids,” so he was naturally in a hurry to update her.  [-] Also amazing:
